Microsoft Will Unveil the ‘Next Generation’ of Windows on June 24

A Major Announcement from Microsoft

Microsoft will host a special event on June 24 to reveal “what’s next for Windows.” The news comes days after the company teased a “next-generation” release. Many expect this update to arrive later this year through the Sun Valley project.

Expected Name: Windows 11

Reports suggest that the new version may be called Windows 11. It will introduce a refreshed user interface with new icons, improved layouts, and cleaner visuals. Some icons have not changed for decades, so this update creates a major shift.

Windows 10 has been available for almost six years. During that time, many users felt that Microsoft avoided big design changes. Now, the company seems ready to modernize Windows and compete more directly with platforms like macOS.

A New Windows App Store

Along with the redesigned interface, Microsoft is also working on a new App Store. The goal is to create a better experience for users and a more open marketplace for developers.

During the Microsoft Build 2021 conference, CEO Satya Nadella said that the new store will support a stronger economy for creators. It may even allow developers to submit any type of Windows app, including browsers like Chrome or Firefox.

Rumors also suggest that Microsoft could allow third-party payment systems. If true, developers could bypass Microsoft’s usual commission rates.

Sun Valley Update Arriving in October

The Sun Valley update is expected to ship in October. It will include new system icons, redesigned menus, and modern animations. These updates will finally replace many Windows 95-era icons that still remain in Windows 10.

Microsoft recently canceled its plan to release 10X, a lightweight version of the OS. That version was based on Windows Core OS and was designed for dual-screen devices. Because of this change, Microsoft may also share new details about the future of Windows on foldable and dual-screen PCs, such as the Surface Neo.
